چکیده

Information appliances (IAs) are mass-produced, lowcost devices for specialized computation/communication tasks. Examples include webTV, smart cellular phones, and web phones. Since low cost and low power-consumption are important requirements in the design of these devices, IAs use relatively slow/cheap CPUs (usually 20{40 MHz). Real-time audio and video communication over the Internet is an integral part of many IAs which means that despite slow hardware, the communication subsystem within the OS must be able to e ciently handle heavy network trafc. This paper presents a protocol architecture which reduces I-cache miss overheads (bene ting short audio messages) and also enables use of single-copy without any hardware support or restrictions on network APIs (bene ting long video messages). We implemented UDP/IP to evaluate our architecture and measurements show that overheads for short messages are reduced about 20% while overheads for long messages

Design and Evaluation of a QoS-Sensitive Communication Subsystem Architecture

There are a growing number of real-time applications (e.g., real-time controls, and audio/video conferencing) that require certain quality of service (QoS) guarantees from the underlying communication subsystem. The communication subsystem (host as well as network) must support real-time communication services that can be used to provide the required QoS of these applications , while providing ...

Bandwidth Regulation of Real-time Traac Classes in Internetworks

New network applications which involve transmission of continuous media data, such as audio and video conferencing, introduce immense challenges for the design of packet-switching internetworks. Existing ow and congestion control mechanisms have been shown to be ineeec-tive for supporting the real-time requirements of continuous media data transfers. We propose a novel bandwidth regulation mech...

Dynamic Resource Management for Continuous Media Traac over Atm Networks

Real-time continuous media traac, such as digital video and audio, is expected to comprise a large percentage of the network load on future high speed packet switch networks such as ATM. A major feature which distinguishes high speed networks from traditional slower speed networks is the large amount of data the network must manage. For eecient network usage, traac control mechanisms are essent...
